Counties throughout North Carolina recently received a combined total of $85 million to help with local COVID-19 relief efforts, the governor said.

The Center Square reported on May 27 that 97 of the state’s counties were provided with a base amount of $250,000 in relief funding with more given based on the number of residents in the county. The funds came from $150 million allocated to county governments as part of the state’s relief package totaling $1.6 billion.

Counties can use the funds for a number of expenses including testing, personal protective equipment, payroll for health care workers, paid leave for public employees, and distance learning, Center Square reported. Counties have also been encouraged to offer support to municipalities.

The counties of Guilford, Mecklenburg and Wake, which are the three largest in North Carolina, previously obtained funds directly from the federal government, Center Square reported.

North Carolina received $3.56 billion in federal relief from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, Center Square reported.
