City of Burlington recently issued the following announcement.
The City of Burlington, in concert with communities across North Carolina, is taking proactive steps to protect the health and wellbeing of our community and our City’s workforce. In a Thursday March 12 press briefing, Governor Roy Cooper and the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) made a series of recommendations to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 (view briefing here). Among those recommendations is to cancel, postpone, or modify large events and gatherings and to take special precautions to protect groups at high risk for severe illness from COVID-19.
Effective Saturday March 14, City departments have been instructed to cancel all non-essential, city-sponsored events, activities, and programs involving public participation. In addition, Kernodle Senior Center, located at 1535 South Mebane Street, will be closed effective March 14. These closures and modifications will be in effect until March 31. We will continue to evaluate and modify the closure schedule as necessary.
Afterschool programs will follow Alamance-Burlington School System and will remain in operation until further notice.
City of Burlington facilities, other than Kernodle Senior Center, will be remain open but all City programming is canceled. These facilities include the Mayco Bigelow Community Center, Fairchild Community Center, Indian Valley Golf Course, Maynard Aquatics Center, and more.
We understand these modifications may be disappointing and inconvenient and that they will have an economic impact on our communities, but they may save lives.
The City is also undertaking internal measures to help slow the spread of COVID-19.
All business travel for City employees outside of Alamance and Guilford counties is canceled unless otherwise authorized by the city manager.
The City has increased its procedures for sanitizing City facilities, focusing on door handles and other surfaces that sustain frequent contact.
Members of our community should also follow the guidance of the NCDHHS and Gov. Cooper. Specifically:
Stay home if you are sick.
Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, and for at least 20 seconds each time.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
Avoid close contact with people who are ill.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
Do not reuse tissue after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose.
Clean and disinfect surfaces that are frequently touched.
