A former Guilford County middle school teacher faces a court appearance later this month after being accused of statutory rape of a child under 15.

Carly Smith, 41, was arrested and charged with the offense last month. The Guildford County Sheriff's Office announced that along with the statutory rape charge, Smith is also accused of indecent liberties with a student by a teacher and indecent liberties with a child, according to a report by the Charlotte Observer.

It was reported that an investigation began after a tip was received about the activities of the former teacher at Northern Guilford Middle School and a student, according to a news release by the sheriff's office. The age of consent in North Carolina is 16, meaning anyone younger cannot “consent to sexual intercourse under any circumstances,” according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, as reported by the Observer.

Smith was issued a $30,000 bond, with her next court date listed as Jan. 16.

An Onslow County middle school teacher was charged earlier in December with sending inappropriate photos and videos to students, according to ABC 12. A Morehead City private school teacher was charged with sexual battery, the same news station reported.
